Transformation of an energy consumer into an energy producer – is it possible?

Wastewater and water treatment plants are usually the largest single electric energy consumers in each town and city.
Wastewater and water treatment processes are usually responsible for 25 – 40% of the electric energy consumption in the city as it is associated with energy-consuming processes and a continuous operation cycle (24 h, 365 days a year)
The changes introduced in Marselisborg / Aarhus, Denmark consisting in the replacement of conventional blowers with high-speed units brought about a 100% surplus energy production - it was achieved without adding any external organic waste or coal and with no additional investments.
Currently, the plant produces a net surplus of both electric and heat energy, supplying it to the district heating system in Denmark's second largest city, Aarhus.
The carbon footprint was reduced by 35%.

The Marselisborg area in Aarhus, Denmark has achieved a 100% surplus energy production by minimising consumption across the entire water cycle and maximising energy production from the wastewater treatment plant. It was achieved without adding any external organic waste or coal and with no additional investments in renewable energy sources.
According to a report by the International Energy Agency, the water sector currently accounts for 4% of global energy consumption. This figure is estimated to double by 2040. Technologies that make it possible to turn the water sector energy-neutral are already available today. And it is not only the water sector that we can change. Electric drives account for 50% of the world's electricity consumption, yet they could be up to 40% more efficient. Globally, this would reduce energy consumption by 8% by 2040.
