The greatest challenge for users of renewable energy sources is using that energy sensibly. Energy from renewables is characterised by high variability, which can at times have a destabilising effect on the power grid. For this reason energy storage plays an extremely important role.

Energy storage makes it possible to accumulate surplus energy produced during peak generation hours and release it in periods less favourable to generation (increased cloud cover, less wind, etc.); it also allows energy to be fed into the grid in a stable manner.

An equally important feature is that they help to avoid costly investment. If electricity demand rises because the company or another area with an electricity requirement is expanding, it may become necessary to increase the connection capacity (the higher draw occurs in short time intervals). This can mean higher operating costs, either through penalties (exceeding the contracted capacity) or through the need to rebuild the grid connection. It should also be borne in mind that such a rebuild is not always possible. In such a situation, using energy storage appears to be the best solution.
