The beneficial effects of the coronavirus pandemic

This year more than 2,250 olive ridley turtles hatched on a Mexican beach in the town of El Desemboque.

That is up to three times more than usual, and the nesting season is not over yet ‼

Everything indicates that we owe this record result to the coronavirus pandemic

Olive ridley turtles lay eggs once a year; the females then come ashore en masse and each of them leaves hundreds of eggs on the beach.

They are at risk even before hatching, as their eggs are collected by people for food.

That is exactly why the lockdown had such a positive effect on the number of turtles that hatched.
